Dr. Jerry M. Foster says that it is remarkable to consider how much has happened in the 150 years since that dramatic and powerful conflict and he encourages Americans everywhere to remember the great armies of the North and South. The Civil War was fought in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, points out Dr. Jerry M. Foster. The war was motivated by a multitude of factors and changes brought by industrialization, adds Dr. Jerry M. Foster, including deep differences in commerce, culture and social organization.

According to Dr. Jerry M. Foster, the war began when Union and Confederate armies collided at Manassas, VA on July 21st, 1861. Barely four years later, reports Dr. Jerry M. Foster, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9th, 1865. During those forty-six months, says Dr. Jerry M. Foster, the Union and Confederate armies engaged in what felt like interminable battle, losing hundreds of thousands of men on each side.

Though our country’s house was literally divided, says Dr. Jerry M. Foster, an even greater nation arose from the conflict. Because of its impact upon our nation, Dr. Jerry M. Foster feels it is important that Civil War history be preserved and studied carefully. When it comes to a long historical perspective, notes Dr. Jerry M. Foster, 150 years is still current events. And in fact, states Dr. Jerry M. Foster, the events of the American Civil War, and the effects of the conflict still reverberate through our culture today, offering up lessons to those who listen.
